I’ll be catching Jon Spencer Blue Explosion live tonight in Toronto. In anticipation of the show, I was browsing YouTube for old snippets of Spencer in action and came across this live clip of “Boogie Chillen”, a song from the awesome collaborative album Spencer made with R.L. Burnside back in the mid-’90s called A Ass Pocket of Whisky.
There’s no date on the video, but I gather it’s probably from that period (even though the grainy quality makes it appear older). Burnside’s only role in the song appears to be shouting at Spencer. It’s a special kind of magic these guys had together. If only Burnside were still around to make a guest appearance tonight.
